Peer Advisor 1 Job Description

  • Reports To: Mindy Pelton, Director, Career Services Center
  • Starting Wage: $19.00/hour – Increases based on student employee (level 1) pay rates wage schedule.

Description of Duties:

  • Support front desk operations, including responding to incoming calls, emails, and greeting visitors.
  • Work with students and alumni who visit the Career Services Center for workshops, resources, Career Closet visits, and drop-ins.
  • Assist with Handshake platform management and promotion.
  • Help manage Career Closet, including donation intake, clothing sorting and restocking.
  • Represent Career Services Center at campus events, such as info tables and outreach activities.
  • Support career fairs, including setup/breakdown, greeting employers, checking in participants, etc.
  • Review professional documents (resumes and cover letters) for students and alumni, providing constructive feedback, via email and face to face during resume clinics.
  • Conduct presentations to build awareness of resume/cover letter best practices and Career Services resources, and to promote career fairs and events.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong sense of reliability and accountability, particularly regarding attendance.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to take ownership of tasks and actively seek out opportunities to contribute.
  • Willingness to be flexible and manage multiple tasks.
  • Detail-oriented with strong time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality customer service through proactive and professional engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills; comfortable engaging with diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to provide constructive feedback to peers.
  • Experience using virtual meeting software (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Excel.
  • Ability to meet requirements listed in the Period of Employment, Required Training Schedule, and Work Schedule sections in this job description.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Handshake.
  • Experience in public speaking and outreach.

Period and Conditions of Employment: 

  • 2025-26 academic year, with the possibility of extension into summer.
  • First day of in-person training begins on 9/22/25. New hires will be required to complete 10-20 hours of paid, online, asynchronous training prior to 9/22/25.
  • Position ends on June 12, 2025, unless position is extended/renewed. See the Appointment Extension/Renewal section for more details.
  • Must be an undergraduate student and intend to enroll in 6 or more credits of coursework fall, winter, and spring quarters.

Required Training Schedule:

  • Asynchronous: Paid, online, asynchronous training will begin on September 8th (10-20 hours)
  • In-person: Begins Monday, September 22, 2025. Details will be sent via email upon hire.
  • Topics include resume and cover letter reviews, general CSC resources, presentations, etc.

Work Schedule: 

  • Based on needs of Career Services Center and student class schedule each quarter.
  • 10-19 hours/week for 2025-26 academic year, (starting first week of classes) during standard business hours Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm
  • Flexible schedules during prep week, finals, and over breaks (possible option to work over breaks/intersession)
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Hybrid schedule based on the needs of the office.

  • Reappointment or extension of a student’s position may be possible but is not guaranteed and will be determined based on departmental needs, funding availability, and the student’s performance.
