Free generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini can support your career exploration and planning by helping you brainstorm ideas, clarify goals, and build confidence. While these tools are useful, they’re not a replacement for personalized support. Be sure to supplement AI-generated insights with feedback from mentors, peers, and the Career Services Center to get the most from your career planning experience.

You can view sample AI prompts tailored to each stage of your career journey below, or download the AI Resource Guide. To use the prompts effectively:

  1. Copy and paste the prompt into your preferred AI tool (like ChatGPT).
  2. Personalize the prompt by replacing anything in [brackets] with your own information—such as your major, career interests, or goals.
  3. Follow any instructions in parentheses—these may include uploading your resume, pasting a job posting, or adding specific details to get the most relevant and personalized responses.
  4. Refine your results by using the follow-up prompts provided or by adding more detail to get more specific, helpful responses.

When using AI for application materials (like resumes and cover letters), be thoughtful. These tools can help you generate ideas or fine-tune your language, but your materials should always reflect your own voice, be truthful, and highlight your unique experiences. Avoid including personally identifiable information, and remember—AI currently works best in English.
